Many single parents are going back to school to get a degree. As a single parent, getting a degree is a way to increase your knowledge, raise their self-esteem and expand their job opportunities. Working toward a liberal arts degree is a great way to make a better life for you and your children. 

The good thing about getting a liberal arts degree is that you get a well-rounded education that can prepare you for many careers. Furthermore, this degree also allows you investigate many subjects to find out what interests you and what you're good at. The humanities teach you about all aspects of human existence. You can study history, religious studies and communications. You can take courses in writing or English, or journalism. Many students major in English because it teaches you how to analyze what you read, a skill useful in any industry.

You have your choice of degree programs, but before you start applying to colleges, you need a high school diploma or its equivalent. As you start to look for a liberal arts degree for single parents, you need to know your options. There is the associate's degree and the bachelor's degree. The first takes two years of full-time study. You can go to a junior college or a community college to get the degree. A bachelor's degree takes four years of full-time study. Every college or university has its own liberal arts degree requirements. In most cases, to apply for college you need to fill out an application, submit transcripts from all schools attended, and submit the results of required tests, most often the SAT (Standard Admissions Test). In addition, after you get into college and graduate, you can continue your education by getting a master's degree and open up even more opportunities.

An online degree or online courses gives you a more flexible schedule. This is a good choice if you have a paid job in addition to the job of taking care of your children. A liberal arts degree for single parents gives you the chance to learn what careers are best for you.

If you don't think you're ready to pursue a degree, you can also find certificate programs at colleges. You can apply for a certificate to see if you really want to get a degree. Certificate programs are a way for single parents to give college a try. Many single parents worry about the time and money of pursuing a career in liberal arts. This is why many universities have programs that offer support for parents. These programs offer services and resources to reduce the stress of returning to school while also raising a family as a single parent. The support offered may include financial aid, housing, child care and support groups. As a single parent, it may be a good idea to choose a college that offers these types of extra services.

Although it takes years of commitment to get a liberal arts degree, for single parents who want to attain certain goals, it's a smart move. Education offers many advantages and sets a good example for your children.
