When it was first introduced, the Optima was essentially a footnote to the more exciting models in Kia's lineup. Lately that's been changing. The Kia Optima options package makes it, in many ways, one of the most exciting compact economy cars on the market. The low cost of ownership from an affordable sticker price and a solid 34 to 35 mpg for freeway driving make the Kia Optima an outstanding new car option.

Buyerlink has always been a great place to get information about the features available in new cars and to develop a real feeling for them before the test drive. As always, it is a good idea that you have a list of informed questions prepared for the dealership before stepping on the lot. Sometimes it helps just to get a feel for what kind of lineup is offered. Here is the rundown on the Kia Optima options:

Kia Optima interior

Kia Optima interiorThe interior of the Kia Optima takes a neat trick from Saab and slants the controls away from the centerline. By angling them toward the driver, precious time may be saved in rapidly adjusting the stereo and climate controls. The high-end Optima package for this year features leather seating, hot and cold running seats and an innovative electronic parking brake. These would be nice to see as the standard for all cars within a few years.

Standards for the latest line of Optimas are steering wheel controls, a rearview camera and an entertainment system that can be operated by your smartphone. It's surprising to see that even with all of this available luxury, Kia still managed to bring it all in for a reasonable MSRP that ranges between $21,350 and $26,800.

Engine options

Kia Optima optionsAll of the Kia Optima options packages have a six-speed automatic transmission as their standard. This is a departure from earlier models, some of which offered the manual transmission in an effort to boost the fuel economy. In this case, that isn't really necessary, since the base model Optima now comes with a very efficient 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that's good for a surprising 200 horsepower.

Sportier trim packages are equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which is usually rough on the mileage. In this case, however, the combination of power and economy manages to deliver 274 horsepower while getting 22 to 24 mpg for city driving and an amazing 35 mpg on the highway.

The Kia Optima has so many features and at such a low cost that it seems poised to run away with the entire market. Not a bad prize, as it happens, since medium cars are some of the best paying and least trouble-prone cars out there. The Kia Optima options packages are like a breath of fresh air in an already very crowded marketplace.
