How to get an IT degree

Those who enjoy working with computers or who have some relevant experience in the field have a good start, but if you want to find a solid career in information technology, you are likely to need an IT degree or a similar qualification.

Information technology jobs can allow you to work in an office setting or to work from home. Those who enjoy working with computers or who have some relevant experience in the field have a good start, but if you want to find a solid career in information technology, you are likely to need an IT degree or a similar qualification.

An IT degree and an IT certificate are very different things. Schools that offer computer certification typically run short programs, and you might finish your training at this level in just a few months; a Bachelor's degree can take four years or longer. The choice between a degree and a shorter IT program is important, because it can determine the type of jobs that you can go on to do.

Look at the requirements of the companies that hire IT professionals. Some will only work with people who list relevant degrees on their resumes, while others care more that you have some form of experience and a positive attitude. You should also realize that if you choose to complete IT certification programs, you'll need to retake those programs in the future as the technology changes. A degree is good forever, but a certificate is sometimes only good for a few months.

There are programs available for those who prefer to take physical classes and those who attend online classes. ITT Tech and DeVry University are two of the better-known schools offering IT certification and degree programs, and these schools often have multiple branches in a single state, giving you more places to work on your degree.

If you decide to get an IT degree online, you might look for programs through The Computer School or similarly well-renowned schools. Western Governors University, for example, is another well-regarded school that offers IT certification online. You can apply for varying levels of degree qualification with a concentration in information technology. You can choose a specific focus and minor when you attend classes at some of the top computer schools. Online programs often offer courses that focus on network design, software development, security or a general information technology program. What you choose depends on your interests and where you want to work when you finish school.

Getting an IT certificate shows that you know the ins and outs of a specific type of software or piece of equipment, but as technology changes, you'll need to update your certification. With programs now available in multiple cities and states across the country, online schools now offer similar programs to attendance-based courses. It's easier now than ever before to get your IT degree.
