If you want to take advantage of the many health care jobs available, you will first need a health care degree. Get started here.

Nursing CareMany people are looking to enter the health care field because it offers a variety of career choices, plenty of employment opportunities, and good starting salaries. If you want to get a health care degree, there are numerous colleges and universities that offer many different programs.

If you want to become a health care provider, you have to know what path you'd like to take before pursuing a degree. Your many choices include nurse, optometrist, respiratory therapist, midwife, radiology technician, paramedic, dietician, massage therapist, pharmacist, hospital administrator, physician's assistant and speech pathologist, to name just a few.

Health care programs at universities include certificate programs and degree programs. For example, you could get an associate degree in dental assisting or medical transcription. These degrees can lead to a new career after two-years of full-time study. Other possibilities include a bachelor's in health care. Your major can be nursing, pharmacy technician, or physical therapy. It takes four years of full-time study to get your bachelor's degree. With a master's in health care, you could specialize in public health, epidemiology, social work or genetic counseling. The length of time to complete a master's degree full time depends on the program. Most take one to three years of study.

If you want to get a health care degree, you need a high school diploma or GED. You then have to decide if you want to work towards an associate degree or a bachelor's degree. This will help you to narrow down a list of schools in which to apply. Another thing to keep in mind is that applying for any degree program is competitive. To increase your chances of being accepted, you need good grades in high school and many colleges also require good scores on the Standard Admission Test. You can prepare for the test by reading SAT guidebooks or taking SAT preparation courses that offer practice tests. Another important part of the application process is your college essay. The essay allows you to discuss why you want to enter the health field. Many colleges will require references from teachers or employers.

The application process is similar if you want a master's degree at a graduate school. You will first need a bachelor's degree if you want to enter graduate school and you may have to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) to apply for some degree programs. An essay and references are also needed.

As you plan to get a health care degree, you must also decide whether to go full time or part time. If you're working while returning to school, going part time is the better option. Most universities offering health care degrees also offer classes online for the convenience of the students. Online programs allow you to attend classes on your own schedule without the need to commute to a campus setting.
