No matter the popularity of new styles of automobiles out on the road from year to year, there's always the need for a small compact that's suitable for both city and suburban use. Before making a buying decision, though, a comparison of the Chevy Sonic vs. the Kia Soul can show off a few of the features that keep the subcompact genre rolling along the streets despite the competition.

Chevy Sonic

Chevy SonicThe Chevy Sonic is fairly new on the auto scene, serving as a replacement for the Chevy Aveo. The Sonic is positioned as a family-friendly car, with a modern look, plenty of safety features from the base model upward and two basic body types, including a four-door sedan model as well as a hatchback model.

The powertrain offers a choice between the base 1.8 L four-cylinder version and a turbocharged 1.4 L with both manual and automatic transmission. An upgrade to the 1.4T engine is available only on the LT and LTZ models of the Sonic, offering efficiencies of 29 mpg in the city and 40 on the highway.

The Sonic offers plenty of space for adults in the front seats, though rear seating is best suited for children due to size limitations. With the hatchback, cargo space can be expanded in the vehicle by flipping the rear of the back seats forward. Safety features are what make the car a standout, though. It has received the IISS Top Safety status and rates high in the safety car rankings from the Federal government with five stars awarded. The latest model also received blind spot mirrors to improve situational awareness. The price for a base model is $14,185.

Kia Soul

Kia SoulThe new Kia Soul may take up the same small space as a compact car, but its tall, boxy design provides a good deal more interior space for consumers to enjoy than the majority of its small competitors. The layout of the vehicle allows ample room for five, or the rear seats can be folded forward to use the space for cargo. With the addition of an IIHS Top Safety Pick Award and a choice between a navigation system or a voice-activated phone and audio system, the Soul makes it high up on the list of most-wanted small autos.

The Kia is more than what's inside the cockpit though. The engine on the the base model is a nimble four-cylinder 1.6 L, which can be upgraded to a 2.0 L for a bit more horsepower. Both engines can be used with either a manual or automatic transmission and provide responsive handling at the low speeds typical with city driving. Mileage is an EPA confirmed 25 mpg city and 20 highway with the 1.6 L base, which comes at a cost of $14,400.
