An executive car refers to an automobile that's bigger than a family car. The BMW 3 Series and the Volvo S80 are two of the best executive cars. They both offer a good blend of performance, interior space and fuel economy. The  S80 has a higher price tag than the entry-level 3 Series, although the higher BMW trim levels cost about the same as the Volvo.

BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series has been at the top of multiple "Best Executive Cars" lists for eight years in a row. The sedan model comes in a variety of trim levels: 320i, 320i xDrive, 328i, 328i xDrive, 335i and 335i xDrive. The 320i trim comes with 17-inch alloy rims, fog lights, cruise control, automatic windshield wipers, leatherette vinyl upholstery interior, leather steering wheel, Bluetooth capability, iDrive interface with a 6.5-inch screen and a premium stereo system with an iPod/USB input.

Upgrading to the 328i will add power front seats, a rearview camera, auto-dimming rearview mirror and driver memory functions. Upgrading to the 335i adds 18-inch alloy rims, auto-leveling and adaptive headlights, a sunroof and automatic high beams.

BMW 3 Series: best executive carsThe 3 Series comes standard with a rear-wheel drive transmission. If you upgrade to the xDrive trim, the transmission will be swapped out for an all-wheel drive transmission. The 320i is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that offers 180 hp.

The 328i uses the same engine but it's tuned for 240 hp. The 335i has a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that delivers 300 hp. The 320i with a manual transmission gets 22 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

The 328i gets 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, while the 335i gets 23 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The 320i starts at $32,550, the 328i starts at $36,850 and the 335i starts at $43,150. These prices can increase if you add package options.

Volvo S80

Volvo S80The Volvo S80 is one of the best executive cars. It comes in 3.2 and T6 trim levels. The S80 3.2 starts at $39,150 and comes with a 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine attached to a front-wheel drive transmission.

Standard features include Bluetooth support, satellite radio, an iPod input, curtain and side airbags, traction and stability control and a DVD player. The engine produces 240 hp and gets 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. 

The S80 T6 comes with an all-wheel drive transmission and has a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine capable of producing 300 hp. The T6 gets 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The T6 comes with the same features as the S80 3.2. You can purchase the T6 Dynamic package that includes 18-inch alloy rims, a sport-tuned suspension, sport seating, an aluminum interior trim and more.
