If you have ever had your car break down leaving you stranded on the side of the road (especially if you are traveling with your family) you know that roadside assistance can be priceless. There are many benefits to adding emergency road service coverage to your State Farm car insurance policy, and here are a few things you need to know about it.

Added security when you need it most

state farm roadside assistance1The biggest benefit in having State Farm car insurance emergency road service coverage is the peace of mind that comes with it. State Farm emergency road service coverage is provided under what it calls its Coverage H option. When you have Coverage H in place on your State Farm car insurance policy, it will cover:

  • Towing your car to a repair facility in response to an accident or some mechanical failure that disables your vehicle
  • Minor fixes or mechanical repairs you may need on the road to get you back on your way
  • Pulling and/or towing your vehicle out of a location where it may be stuck or creating a hazard to traffic and safety
  • Delivery of gas or oil or other fluids you may need to continue on your way
  • Tire repair or replacement assistance
  • Battery jumpstart services
  • Limited locksmith services

When you have State Farm car insurance emergency road service (Coverage H) you will not bear any up-front costs for these covered services. State Farm will be billed directly.

You can get limited coverage, even without buying the full option

Even if you do not elect to add emergency road service coverage (Coverage H) to your State Farm car insurance, you may have access to these services at a reduced rate. Depending on the state where you live and drive, if you have a State Farm car insurance policy that includes collision coverage and/or comprehensive coverage and you find yourself stranded because of a roadside emergency, you can request assistance with the services available through the Coverage H option. You will need to pay for those services, but you will do so at a competitive rate negotiated by State Farm. This rate will usually be less than what is available in the market. If you pay for the services, you can then submit the receipts to your agent for reimbursement consideration.

Very affordable, even when you buy full coverage

Coverage limits and costs vary by state and as a result, the costs associated with adding this level of coverage to your State Farm car insurance policy will also vary. Wherever it is available, it tends to be far more reasonable than paying out-of-pocket for some of the services that are covered. Selecting a handful of states where State Farm car insurance emergency road service coverage is made available, the added cost to premium for a standard policy ranged from $16-$28 in added premium over a policy term. When you compare what it would cost you to have a tow truck come rescue you and your family in the event of a roadside emergency, the coverage is a bargain.

For example, many new cars come with “concierge” service packages offering owners roadside assistance and emergency repair services for a limited time after the purchase of the car. Many extended warranties on newer cars also offer towing and roadside repair services.

If you are a member of a car club, an association or a “membership-only” purchasing club (such as Costco) you may have access to similar services through your membership.
