In recent years, and thanks to some aggressive national advertising campaigns, Liberty Mutual has emerged as a leading provider of car insurance products and services in the United States. The company was originally founded in Massachusetts in 1912 to offer products and services in response to that state's legislative passage of workers’ compensation laws. The company wrote is first automobile insurance policy in 1914 and since then, it has grown to be the nation’s sixth or seventh largest provider of car insurance (depending on the survey you rely on.)

liberty mutual car insurance pricesLiberty Mutual offers a full range of insurance products and services for individuals and businesses in every state (though in some regions, it offers these products and services more broadly through its affiliate, Safeco Insurance.) In recent years, the company has expanded its online toolbox enabling current and potential customers to review policies, track any claims and even preview competitive quotes for coverage before they ever have to speak directly with an agent or representative. One thing these tools will illustrate is just how different rates can be when you are seeking insurance in different parts of the country.

Compare some car insurance rate quotes today

To give you a better sense of how where you live and drive can greatly influence the rates you will be quoted for car insurance coverage, we’ve put together a fairly typical set of driver profiles and took those profiles car insurance shopping. To make the experiment a meaningful one, we plugged in details for insurance in three separate markets, each one representing what annual surveys show to be expensive, moderate and inexpensive markets for car insurance (respectively). While every individual driver or family of drivers will present unique challenges and needs for car insurance protection, these coverage plans will give you a sense of what you can expect to pay for Liberty Mutual car insurance, should you choose them.

Driver profile(s)

For this online quoting exercise, we’re going to evaluate Liberty Mutual car insurance for a family (in essence). Our drivers include Gary who is a 40-year old licensed architect who in recent years has retreated from private practice to teach architecture at the college level (he holds a Ph.D. in architecture, design and architectural design history.) We’re also inuring Gary’s wife Gillian, a 36-year old licensed attorney who has been taking a sabbatical from her law practice to help raise their two girls (ages 5 and 9). Gary and Gillian own their home and have both been continually insured since first getting licensed in their late teens. Both have great driving records with no accidents or moving violations. They have excellent individual and combined household credit scores.

liberty mutual car insurance prices1Gary and Gillian have two cars they hope to insure. Gary relies primarily on the 2010 Toyota Camry they own free and clear. The car comes equipped with a number of standard, factory-installed anti-theft and safety devices and currently has about 85,000 miles on it. It is routinely kept garaged at the house when Gary isn’t using it to commute to work and an occasional class-related event.

The other car they hope to insure is a 2013 Honda Odyssey that Gillian mostly uses for daily errands and for running the girls to school-related and extracurricular events like dance classes and field hockey games. (It’s also the go-to vehicle for family outings.) It, too, primarily remains in a garage when not in use.

The Honda is still being paid for on a car loan they took out after trading in a previous family wagon and putting a nice down payment on the new loan. The Honda has a number of factory-installed anti-theft and safety devices and though only a year old, it’s odometer is fast approaching 20,000 miles.

Markets for insurance

To get a full range of the options and prices you may find when considering Liberty Mutual car insurance, we’re taking Gary, Gillian and the two girls car insurance shopping in three markets that (in broad strokes) represent the three-tiers of states and what drivers can expect to pay for car insurance. The markets we’re taking Gary and Gillian shopping for Liberty Mutual car insurance include: Baton Rouge, Louisiana (considered an expensive state for car insurance costs); Auburn, Alabama (a mid-range city and marketplace for car insurance costs); and Boise, Idaho (a state and market that routinely ranks as one of the least expensive ones in the country for car insurance.)

Using the online quoting and coverage tools available from Liberty Mutual, here are the results when we took the family shopping in these three markets:

(Note: the coverage options, levels and prices listed in each of the following cases result from online queries conducted in late March of 2014.)

Louisiana

liberty mutual car insurance prices2This state is notorious for high car insurance costs, even though it has relatively innocuous car insurance requirements for drivers. A propensity for natural disasters and the fact that the state historically offers high payouts for car insurance recovery claims in its courts help contribute to the steep cost for insuring a car in Louisiana. Licensed drivers in Louisiana are required to have (at the least) the following car insurance coverage options and levels in place to drive there:

  • $15,000 in bodily injury liability coverage for a single person per accident
  • $30,000 in total bodily injury liability coverage per accident
  • $25,000 in total property damage liability coverage per accident

Our hypothetical family of car insurance shoppers (Gary and Gillian) routinely puts coverage options and levels in place that comfortably exceed the requirements of the state where they live. The terms and conditions of the car loan they have in place for the Odyssey require that they have some form of protection against possible damage sustained by the car. Considering all of these factors, here’s the coverage plan we plugged in when taking Gary and Gillian looking for Liberty Mutual car insurance in Louisiana:

  • Liability coverage at 100/300/100 levels
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage at 100/300 levels
  • Medical payments coverage at $2,000
  • Collision coverage with a $500 deductible (separate for each individual car)
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $500 deductible (separate for each individual car)
  • Liberty’s roadside assistance/towing option
  • Liberty’s rental car reimbursement option

Gary and Gillian are eligible for a number of standard and specialized car insurance premium discounts through Liberty Mutual in Louisiana. They get discounts for the safety and anti-theft devices on both cars. They get a discount for insuring more than one vehicle. They get a discount for selecting to conduct their shopping and payments online and for paying the full premium in a lump sum. They get a discount for electing to take on a Liberty Mutual car insurance plan just prior to when an existing policy with another carrier expires (something referred to as an Early Shopper discount.) The professional organizations they belong to (the Bar Association and the American Institute of Architects) as well as the colleges they graduated from make them eligible for Liberty Mutual’s affinity discount plan. After all these discounts rattle through the process, Gary and Gillian, for both cars, will be paying $220 - $235 monthly for this expanded Liberty Mutual car insurance plan in Louisiana.

Alabama

liberty mutual car insurance price3While there is just a little over 400 miles distance between Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Auburn, Alabama, the distance is far greater in what drivers can expect to pay in car insurance costs. Alabama falls roughly in the middle of the pack for states when evaluated by cost of insuring a car. Licensed drivers in Alabama are required to have (at a minimum) these car insurance coverage options and levels in place:

  • $25,000 in bodily injury liability coverage for a single person per accident
  • $50,000 in total bodily injury liability coverage per accident
  • $25,000 in total property damage liability coverage per accident

Despite the fact that Alabama routinely ranks as a state (if not the state) with the highest number of uninsured drivers, it does not require licensed drivers to carry uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage in addition to these liability levels. That’s not going to deter Gary and Gillian from adding it to the packages they consider. In fact, they put a similar protection plan in place through Liberty Mutual in Alabama as they did in Louisiana:

  • Liability coverage at 100/300/100 levels
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage at 100/300/100 levels
  • Medical payments coverage at $1,000
  • Collision coverage with a $500 deductible (separate for each car)
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $500 deductible (separate for each car)
  • Liberty’s roadside assistance/towing option
  • Liberty’s rental reimbursement option

Just as in Louisiana, Gary and Gillian get numerous discounts in Alabama for multi-car coverage, safety and anti-theft devices, early shopper and affinity membership recognition. The result is an impressive package of coverage for the two cars and a Liberty Mutual Alabama car insurance bill of $160 - $165 each month.

Idaho

liberty mutual car insurance prices5The state for great potatoes is also a state for great car insurance rates. Idaho routinely ranks as one of the most affordable states for drivers seeking car insurance coverage. This is reflected here, as the car insurance requirements for licensed drivers in Idaho are very similar to those in the other two states where we took Gary and Gillian shopping:

  • $25,000 in bodily injury liability coverage for a single person per accident
  • $50,000 in total bodily injury liability coverage per accident
  • $15,000 in total property damage liability coverage

Following the same pattern as we did in the other states, here’s the package of coverage we put in place through Liberty Mutual for Gary and Gillian in Idaho:

  • Liability coverage at 100/300/100 levels
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage at 100/300 levels
  • Medical payments coverage of $1,000
  • Collision coverage with a $500 deductible (separate for each car)
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $500 deductible (separate for each car)
  • Liberty’s roadside assistance/towing option
  • Liberty’s rental reimbursement option

The list of Idaho premium discounts available to Gary and Gillian through Liberty Mutual are similar to the ones they are eligible for in the other states (multi-car, safety devices, early shoppers, affinity, etc.) and as a result, we see that Idaho lives up to its reputation as a very inexpensive state for car insurance. The monthly premium for the two cars combined runs $85 - $100. Even if we add the unique Liberty Mutual program known as Better Car Replacement on the Odyssey (the one car they have with an existing loan balance) it will only run Gary and Gillian an additional $4 per month.

Some additional considerations

It should be noted that in each of the above pricing and coverage scenarios, Liberty Mutual would extend our hypothetical couple additional discounts if they elected to add another Liberty Mutual product (such as homeowner insurance or life insurance.)

The above coverage and pricing scenarios are also based on car insurance policies that remain in place for 12 months (most car insurance policies are for six months at a time.) This could play a role in whether Gary and Gillian would want to (or even be able to) pay for the entire premium in a lump sum and thus get Liberty Mutual’s pay-in-full discount.
