In recent years, a growing number of drivers in the United States have been turning to Ameriprise Financial to find excellent car insurance coverage. While the company may be better known for its financial investment and retirement products and services, its combined line of auto and home insurance products is quickly becoming a favorite in many sectors. One big reason may be the value drivers are finding when they go to put a coverage package in place with Ameriprise. Coverage plans are flexible and premiums surprisingly affordable.

While there are many factors that go into calculating the final rate a driver will pay for any car insurance plan, location can be a big one. To show just how much where you live and drive can impact what you pay for car insurance, we’ve put together a reasonable mock driver profile and taken it shopping for car insurance in three disparate city/state markets. While your specific experience with shopping for car insurance will be different from the following examples, these coverage scenarios should give you some idea of what you can expect to pay for a sound coverage plan from Ameriprise. It should also give you an idea of whether you’re paying way too much with your current insurer.

Our driver profile

ameriprise car insurance prices1To go shopping for car insurance, we’ve put together a driver profile to use when soliciting online Ameriprise car insurance quotes. We’ll call our mystery car insurance shopper Lucinda. She will turn 40 later this year and she’s the divorced mom of two girls (both still in grade school) who live with her.

Lucinda is a college professor and women’s basketball coach. She drives a 2010 Jeep Patriot she owns outright. She tends to live in college towns with close access to her work (often times she walks or rides a bike to work) and her 2010 Jeep has just under 50,000 miles on it. The Patriot she drives is a 4-door, 4WD model that comes with driver-side and passenger air bags and anti-lock brakes. Lucinda rents for the time being. She has no prior accidents or serious infractions and she maintains an excellent credit score.

The city/state markets for car insurance

To get a sense of just how Ameriprise car insurance prices stack up, we’re taking Lucinda car insurance shopping in three very different markets. The cross-section of markets includes: Athens, Georgia; Walla Walla, Washington; and Columbus, Ohio. The nice factor in using these three cities to do a comparison is that these markets represent expensive, mid-range and less expensive cities/states (respectively) for car insurance prices, according to a compilation of surveys on the subject ranking states for car insurance costs in 2014.

Check out some free car insurance coverage quotes, today.

We lined up what the legal requirements for licensed drivers in each state are and given that Lucinda is a single-mom and tends to be more careful, we put coverage options and levels in place that reasonably exceeded these state requirements.

Here’ what we found when we went shopping for Ameriprise car insurance in each of these markets:

(The rates listed below were drawn from online quotes solicited using the Ameriprise online tool and were drawn in March of 2014.)

Georgia

ameriprise car insurance prices2The state of Georgia is one of the most expensive for car insurance, according to a number of annual surveys, despite having some pretty straightforward and rather uncomplicated insurance requirements. To be in compliance with state car insurance laws, licensed drivers in Georgia must have the following coverage options and limits in place:

  • $25,000 in bodily injury liability for a single person per accident
  • $50,000 in total bodily injury liability coverage per accident
  • $25,000 in total property damage liability coverage per accident

In addition, all licensed drivers have to be offered uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage by any prospective insurer in levels equal to the liability limits being offered, though a driver may refuse this additional coverage without penalty.

To put Lucinda in good standing and to provide her coverage that comfortably exceeds these limits in Georgia here’s the Ameriprise plan we put in place for her while she lives and works in Athens:

  • Liability coverage with 100/300/100 levels
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage with 100/300/100 levels
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $250 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $250 deductible
  • Rental car reimbursement coverage in place
  • Roadside assistance/towing coverage in place

In Georgia, Ameriprise is able to offer Lucinda a discount on her premium thanks to the safety devices on her car and the low mileage she drives. Even with the discounts, this Georgia Ameriprise car insurance package will run Lucinda $105 - $115 a month.

Washington

ameriprise car insurance prices3The state of Washington is pretty close to the middle of the pack when it comes to annual surveys of car insurance costs. It falls just below the national median for 2014. Licensed drivers in the state of Washington are required to have the following car insurance options/limits in place:

  • $25,000 in bodily injury liability coverage for a singe person per accident
  • $50,000 in total bodily injury liability coverage per accident
  • $10,000 in total property damage liability coverage per accident

The car insurance coverage plan from Ameriprise we put in place for Lucinda while she lives and teaches in the college town of Walla Walla includes:

  • Liability coverage with 100/300/100 levels
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage at 100/300/100 levels
  • Personal injury protection (PIP) coverage at $10,000
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $250 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $250 deductible
  • Rental car reimbursement coverage in place
  • Roadside assistance/towing coverage in place

In addition to the safety features and low mileage discounts she received in Georgia, Ameriprise is able to extend Lucinda additional discounts in Washington due to the fact that she parks her car in a covered area/garage and due to her advanced degree as a college professor. This makes her already-affordable Ameriprise Washington car insurance plan even more affordable at $70 - $80 monthly.

Ohio

ameriprise car insurance prices4In 2014, Ohio became the least expensive state for car insurance, perhaps in part due to the fact that the state finally upped its minimum required levels of coverage for licensed drivers (the first time since the late ‘60s.) The new minimum required insurance coverage levels for licensed drivers in Ohio are:

  • $25,000 in bodily injury liability coverage for a single person per accident
  • $50,000 in total bodily injury liability coverage per accident
  • $25,000 in total property damage liability coverage per accident

The Ameriprise car insurance coverage package we put in place for Lucinda in Columbus included:

  • Liability coverage at 100/300/100 levels
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage at 100/300/100 levels
  • Medical payments coverage at $5,000
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $250 deductible
  • Collision coverage with a $500 deductible
  • Rental car reimbursement coverage in place
  • Roadside assistance/towing coverage in place

Like in Washington, Ameriprise is able to extend Lucinda discounts for safety devices on her car, low mileage driving, garaging her car and for having advanced degrees. With these discounts kicking in, Lucinda’s Ohio Amerprise car insurance coverage will run her $60 - $70 monthly.
