One of the nice things about owning a pickup truck—apart from all the friends you can help move—is the towing capacity. Truck towing capacity is one of those features you'll hear about in a commercial or see listed on the vehicle sticker, but until you have to actually hook a trailer up to the hitch, it's pretty easy to overlook this cardinal advantage a truck will have over other types of vehicles.

Chevy SilveradoPickup trucks have been steadily improving over the years in the areas of fuel economy, interior amenities and overall performance, to the point that some trucks are posting mpg figures that are competitive with full-size sedans.

The price of a new truck might still be a little higher than that of a smaller vehicle, and the cost of ownership can also be higher, but the advantages in truck towing capacity more than offset these relatively minor disadvantages if you have a lot to haul.

Buyerlink is a good place to learn about the advantages of investing in a high truck towing capacity and to get a clearer picture of what's available on today's market.

Chevy Silverado

The first entrant into the pickup challenge is the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. This truck, which costs between $23,590 and $43,385, is powered by any one of four available engines. These range from a relatively modest 4.3-liter V-6 with a solid 195 horsepower to the much more impressive 6.2-liter Flex-Fuel V-8, whose 403 hp manages a respectable 10,700-pound maximum towing capacity.

Ford F-150

Ford F-150The Ford F-150 has spent decades dominating the domestic pickup truck market. The new lineup is absolutely littered with trim packages that drive the F-150 from a very affordable and plain $23,955 trim level to what is practically luxury car territory at $53,185. The F-150 offers plenty of options for hauling and towing, with everything from a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine under the hood to a monster 6.2-liter V-8.

The F-150 comes in multiple configurations, with optional SuperCab, SuperCrew, 4x2 and 4x4 configurations. A strong 11,300 pounds of towing capacity is about the best you're likely to manage with the F-150, and it's actually possible to reach this target with multiple different engine and cab configurations. Be sure to ask for the maximum towing package from the dealer if you're looking to break the 11,000-pound mark.

Dodge Ram

The Dodge Ram 1500 comes in a range of styles and power options. One of the key advantages of investing in a Dodge is the legendary Hemi engine, which is available for three separate package levels. The cheapest of these will run as low as $23,950, and higher-end options push the MSRP to $28,600. Each of the 5.7-liter V-8 Hemis will give your Ram 1500 a maximum capacity of 9,250 pounds.
