Driving a minivan might make you feel that you're safe just because these vehicles are designed for families, before you pick a new van at random you should look at the 2013 minivan best safety ratings. The ratings help you see which vehicles actually have the top safety features to protect you and your passengers.

2013 minivans best safety ratings: Toyota SiennaThe Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or IIHS, is the main organization behind the minivan best safety ratings. Every year, the organization looks at the newest models on the market, tests those models and issues a safety rating for each one. The group offers a rating of G for Good, A for Acceptable, M for Marginal and P for Poor.

In 2013, four models received a grade of G across the board: the Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Grand Caravan, Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna. The 2013 Nissan Quest received a near-perfect score, but the car received a grade of A in one category.

Honda OdysseyThe IIHS issues car rankings based on moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, rollover/roof strength and rear/head restraints.

The moderate overlap front test checks to see how the minivan handles moderate crashes to the front of the van. The group looks at the damage that occurs to the exterior and interior of the vehicle and how well the van absorbs the impact of the crash.

The small overlap front test does the same thing, but it tests how well the minivan does against side crashes. A test of the minivan's side is similar, but the group checks to see how well the van reacts when an object strikes the van head-on from the side.

Nissan QuestIf you read a buyer's guide, you'll see how the organization tests the minivans roof strength. This helps the group determine the amount of damage the van might suffer if it rolled over on the road. Minivan best safety ratings also look at the effectiveness of head and seat restraints, including seat belts.

The IIHS only gives a grade of A to minivans that have seats that put light pressure on the head of an average male and keep passengers from sliding forward during sudden stops. You can find the top safety ratings in any good car-buying guide, which should offer some reviews as well.

Use those reviews, the miles per gallon, or MPG, of the vehicle and its cost to determine your next minivan.
