Infiniti surprised many car industry insiders and reviewers when it decided to continue selling its 2013 version of the G37 even after touting the rollout of the new Q50 as a marquee development for 2014. Early press touted the new Infiniti Q50 as the logical replacement for the older model G37. After a bit of consumer pushback and some internal second-guessing, the head honchos at Nissan/Infiniti decided that it's not quite time to end production on their earlier model sedan. Infiniti now says that the G37 will stay in production and be available in the U.S. market through the 2015 model year, when it will then be rebranded as the Q40.

Why the unorthodox strategy? Won’t this just split the Infiniti market? A spokesman for Infiniti told Autoblog the company had concerns that its new, higher-end Q50 may not meet the demands of customers looking for a more mid-range vehicle (at least where price is concerned.) Infiniti America’s Vice President Ben Poore also said: "It creates room to strategically offer the repositioned G37 at the lower end of the near luxury segment in addition to making a new statement with the higher-positioned Q50." While it's amusing to think of the excellent Infiniti G37 as a "lower end vehicle", this is the strategy they are going with for now.

Any consumer looking for a new Infiniti sedan has now been involuntarily pushed into a debate between the Infiniti Q50 vs G37. Pricing

Infiniti Q50As Nissan's luxury brand, Infiniti prices tend to be on the steeper side. They do, however, remain competitive with many other makes and models that aspire and fall into luxury class. Infiniti has established an excellent reputation (and an ardent fan base) for producing vehicles with tremendous fit and finish. They pride themselves on delivering a lot for the price you pay. While there may still be a bit of the money is no object crowd swimming in the luxury auto market, most people are going to take that long hard look at the bottom line when choosing any new vehicle.

As promised (and as you may have expected,) the new Infiniti Q50 is priced a bit higher than the G37 sedan it is replacing. The Q50 debuts with a base, entry-level MSRP of $37,600 (this for the basic model, minus many bells and whistles) and extends to an MSRP of $45,450 for the AWD Q50S (for Sport model.) There is also a Q50 Hybrid Premium as Infiniti joins a legion of other luxury car manufacturers in trying to snare a bit of the “green driver” market. This model starts out with an MSRP of $44,400 and climbs to a high-end of $48,600.

To make this comparison even harder, the Infiniti G37 actually had its prices slashed in 2014. The entry-level G37 (dubbed Journey) saw its base MSRP drop from $37,350 to $32,550. That’s a nice little discount of $5,000 year-over-year and a cool $5,100 difference between the entry-level Q50 vs G37. This may play the deciding role in which vehicle you choose. Think about this for a second; you get a $5,000 discount on a G37 for no other reason than Infiniti created a similar-yet-newer model. (It’s the same highly rated luxury sedan it's always been, now with savings passed on to the consumer.) If you extend the comparison out, the high-end 2014 G37X AWD starts with a base MSRP of $34,550 compared to the high-end Q50 that rings in at a starting MSRP of $45,450 (a savings of $11,000 for a very comparable horse from the same stable.) Go further in your comparisons and you’ll see it’s not easy being green with the price difference between the high-end 2014 G37 and the upper-end 2014 Q50 hybrid totaling more than $14,000 (that’s worth at least a couple great used cars!)

Gas prices are always a fluctuating variable when it comes to calculating total cost of ownership with any car. As such, it’s still a prudent move to find a new car that will give you the most from its tankful. Both the Infinity G37 and the Infinity Q50 feature the same 3.7L, six-cylinder engine delivering 328-hp. Both models are roughly the same weight. The result is that the miles per gallons ratings for the Q50 and the G37 are petty evenly matched.

The base AWD Q50 is rated for gets 20 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, while the G37 gets 19 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway. With either model, you're not going to have to make too many stops at the filling station. Of course, if you want to get serious about better gas mileage, consider the full line of the Q50's hybrid models. The hybrids all feature a 3.5L V6 engine delivering 360-hp while still getting anywhere from 27-29 mpg in the city and upwards of 36 mpg in highway driving. (These ratings put the Q50 hybrid right up there with the Nissan Altima as one of the most efficient sedans on the road.)

Some of the pleasures of driving a fine Infiniti vehicle comes thanks to the carmaker’s focus on creature comforts. With advanced climate controls and plush seating, both the Q50 and G37 can help make your work commute feel like a day at the spa. The brand has always gone above and beyond the norm, taking extra steps to provide customers with the most comfortable, luxurious ride you’ll find for the money. These two models are a testament to that priority. Both the Q50 and the G37 lines feature comparable specs for legroom and headroom, though the Q50 is considered a bit more spacious (and it feels that way when you slide in behind the wheel or even tuck into its surprisingly comfortable backseat.)

The Infiniti Q50 seats five and includes eight-way power-adjustable front seats that will accommodate virtually any body type. The front seats are supportive and comfortable, heated and cooled, with leather upholstery and available memory settings so you can always get your seat just the way you want it. The Q50 also has spacious rear seating, so six-footers can sit comfortably in back without brushing their heads against the ceiling.

The G37 offers leather heated front seats as standard across all available finish packages. While the seats are comfortable and supportive, some folks posting on blogs and review sites (as well as a few reviewers) gripe that the cabin isn't spacious enough for a midsize luxury sedan. While we didn’t experience this, some other folks have posted complaints suggesting that the backseats can barely fit full-grown adults.

Even as the hold workhorse, the G37 still has plenty of comfort features including dual-zone automatic climate control and six-speaker stereo system. Optional upgrades include rear parking sensors, navigation system and Bose sound system. (These are features that carryover and you'll find them standard on the Q50 line.)

One of the biggest upgrades (and a substantial point of departure when comparing the Infiniti Q50 vs G37) is the newer model’s advanced technology features. You’d be forgiven if you mistook the new cockpit of the Q50 for a personal spaceship. The Infiniti InTouch infotainment system comes standard on all Q50 models and features an upper 8-inch, touch-screen display and a lower 7-inch, touch-screen dash. It literally puts controls at your fingertips where it's most convenient for you.

Once you've given up washing your car twice a week and really just want your car to give you excellent performance, you'll want to know you made the right decision. This is where things get interesting (and not just if you’re a bona fide gearhead.) Once you strip away all the fancy fixins, these two cars are virtually identical. Both feature a 3.7-liter V6, equipped with 328 horses that make for a powerful ride. (Admittedly, the hybrid engine on the top Q50 model ups the ante with 360 horsepower.)  The two basic models (Q50 and G37) are very much the same. If you're buying a car based on performance alone, you should go with the more economically friendly G37. However, the Q50 features multiple "drive modes" that you can toggle between on the touch screen. Choose between the pre-set, standard alignments (Sport, Standard, Eco, and Snow) or get adventurous and create some personalized settings to deliver you just the right performance specs for each driving situation you know you may encounter or even imagine.

The Bottom line

Getting more information may not help you. In fact, the more you look into this Q50 vs G37 comparison, the more difficult it becomes to figure out Infiniti's reasoning for keeping the G37 in production at all. With a moderately priced upgrade not only in the wings but ready for her close-up, it’s hard to square keeping the older model around. (You could also argue the other side of this debate and wonder why Infinity launched the Q50 when it did.) It seems as though Infiniti is hoping to brand a full line of “Q” cars in coming years as its new starting lineup and perhaps it wanted to gently break it to fans of the G37. Whatever the reasoning, if stylish attractiveness and technological enhancement is what you're after, you may find the Q50 worth the $5,000 difference.
