Car shoppers often look for vehicles with powerful engines or comfortable interiors, but the safety rating of your new car is also important. Buying one of the cars with the best safety rating awarded by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety can protect you from injuries in the event of an accident. Some insurance companies also offer lower rates to people who drive top-rated safety picks. Learn more about IIHS ratings and find out which models have been awarded top safety honors.

The IIHS awarded the Top Safety Pick+ rating to four models this year. The Top Safety Pick+ rating builds on the Top Safety Pick rating, which is awarded to vehicles that receive "good" ratings in the moderate overlap side, front, rear and rollover tests. The IIHS does not take each vehicle's performance on the small overlap front test into account when assigning the Top Safety Pick rating. Vehicles that earn Top Safety Pick+ must receive "good" ratings in four of the five tests administered by the IIHS. A Top Safety Pick+ must also receive a rating no lower than "acceptable" on the fifth IIHS test.
