Diesel-fueled BMW cars are quite common in Europe. However, they're extremely rare in North America. This is about to change. BMW's announcement that it will be launching a full line of BMW diesel models this year means that people no longer have to import to benefit from this option. This car-buying guide provides an overview of these highly anticipated cars.

BMW 3 Series diesel pricesBMW unveiled a 3-Series diesel sedan in the first quarter and is expected to unveil a wagon trim in the second half. The 3-Series line features several welcome upgrades. These include a B3 Bi-Turbo tuning kit that delivers enhanced performance and an optional all-wheel-drive system for better traction.

generous 19/28 mpg rating increases the appeal of this car. Depending on the driver's preference, the 3-Series BMW diesel models can either be equipped with a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed automatic. The price of the 3-Series ranges from $34,550 to $60,800.

Launched in 1972, the BMW 5-Series is about to experience yet another round of upgrades with the release of the sixth-generation vehicle. Some of these include a revamp of the current engine with a more advanced inline turbo six-cylinder and a body redesign that removes the current headlight-to-grill connection.

The 5-Series BMW diesel models are also expected to have an eight-speed automatic transmission, which will be harnessed to the popular Brake Energy Regeneration system. The diesel 5-Series is billed for release in the third quarter of 2013, with an estimated price range from $47,800 to $65,000.

Some of the standard features offered with each trim include:

  • Bluetooth
  • Automatic transmission
  • Traction control
  • Side/Curtain airbags
  • All-wheel drive
  • Stability control

BMW 3 Series diesel wagon pricesAvailable as a sedan, the 7-Series has earned consistently good reviews. It's featured highly on most car rankings and vehicle buyer's guides. The 2013 model is unlikely to be any different. The engine is expected to be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission (with upgrades available for an eight-speed option) and is rumored to be powered by a range of four-, six-, eight- and 12-cylinder engines. In addition to a redesign, the fifth-generation model is expected to be lighter, thanks in part to the increased use of carbon fiber for the structure and body panels.

The BMW X5 was the German company's first SUV. Scheduled for launch in the final quarter of 2013, the BMW X5 represents the third generation of this line and offers five trims: the xDrive50i, xDrive35d, xDrive35i Premium, xDrive35i and the xDrive35i Sport Activity. The expected improvements include a reduction in the car's weight and the introduction of two new four-cylinder engines. The cost of the XDrive ranges from $47,500 and $64,200, depending on the trim. Current miles per gallon estimates put the line at 16/23 mpg.
