Gone are the days when pickup trucks were simply gas-guzzling monsters that were only concerned with maximizing power and performance as new engine technologies have allowed for more fuel efficiency without sacrificing horsepower.

When looking at the list of the best truck mpg ratings, you'll soon see just how far they've come as now multiple lightweight and full-size pickups are available that manage to achieve over 20 miles per gallon.

Compact trucks

Toyota Tacoma - Best SUV mpgAt the top of the list of the best truck mpg ratings is the lightweight two-wheel drive Toyota Tacoma that's fitted with a smaller 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine. If you choose the five-speed manual transmission, you should be able to achieve an industry-leading 21 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

While this is far from being the most powerful engine in its class, that's to be expected for such a high efficiency truck. What's more, this is one of the most affordable trucks on the market, with a base price of just under $18,000.

Full-size hybrid trucks

If you need the payload capacity and towing capabilities of a full-size truck, but are still concerned with gas mileage, you'll be excited to know General Motors has now Chevy Silveradostarted producing a hybrid gasoline-electric truck. Due to the added electric motor, the Chevy Silverado Hybrid and GMC Sierra Hybrid rank just below the Tacoma in the list of the best truck mpg ratings, which is no small feat for such a large, powerful truck. This is the first full-size hybrid truck to hit the American market, and it's quickly attracted a lot of admirers by getting 20 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway.

While this gas mileage is quite impressive in itself, the more impressive thing is it manages this feat while still producing 332 horsepower, which is about the same as the much less fuel-efficient trucks in its class. Still, the cost reflects this achievement as this truck has a price of over $41,000, nearly double the price of the standard Silverado 1500.

Gas-powered full-size trucks

Finally, the best fully gasoline powered full-size truck is the Dodge Ram 1500 HFE, which actually gets two more miles per gallon on the highway than the Silverado Hybrid, although it's a few miles behind for city driving. It's also just as powerful as the Silverado, while costing more than $10,000 less, making it a great option for anyone with a smaller budget.
