Chevrolet Volt

Key among these is a lithium-ion battery pack that offers increased efficiency. The Prius Plug-in is capable of reaching speeds of up to 62 mph on just the battery and has an estimated fuel economy rating of 87 mpg.

Nissan Leaf

Nissan Leaf best-selling electric carsIn 2012, Nissan reported sales of more than 4,000 units of the Nissan Leaf. The all-electric car is capable of hitting speeds of 60 mph in less than 10 seconds and comes with a mind-boggling fuel economy of 106 mpg in the city and 92 mpg on the highway.

Offered in SV and SL trims, the car's agile handling, quiet cabin and solid acceleration have led it to become a favorite among car owners across the country. Prices for the car range from $35,200 to $37,000.

Ford Focus

Sales of the Ford Focus did not actually begin until the middle of 2012, but the electric car was still able to break into the top five best-selling electric cars for the year. Critics were impressed with the car's sleek design and luxurious interior.

The Ford Focus also drew positive reviews for its generous fuel economy of 110 mpg in the city and 99 mpg on the highway. At $39,300, the Ford Focus is one of the more expensive hybrid cars in the market.
