A direct Audi vs. Lexus comparison isn't the kind of showdown you'd expect to see, given the differences between the two companies. One is a storied luxury German import brand with a reputation for delivering plush interiors and expanded options packages at a relatively low cost. The other is at the high end of Japanese imports and is more famous for reliable rotary engines, swift performance and industry-leading fuel economy.

Audi vs Lexus: Audi A3Each brand has its own history, but over the years, they've been steadily converging on many of the same markets. In a way, it could be said that Toyota opened its Lexus line specifically as a challenge to Audi's market position, as the two brands draw many of the same customers and are marketed in much the same way. Perhaps an Audi vs. Lexus comparison is inevitable.

Buyerlink is a good place to start working out the differences between these two brands, as well as to get a fuller sense of the way the luxury import market has managed to converge on many of the same points, despite the vast differences in starting positions in the great Audi vs. Lexus showdown.

In terms of price, both Audi and Lexus are tightly competitive. Next to more prestigious brands such as Mercedes and BMW, Audi has always stood out as being more reasonable. While the sometimes absurdly high prices of other luxury brands have sometimes been a part of their appeal as status symbols, Audi has always tried to deliver many of the same options at a substantial discount. Even today, the Audi A3 is offered at between $27,270 and $30,850, making it competitive with the entry-level Lexus CT 200h, which carries a price tag of $32,050.

Lexus ES350On the higher end of the two lines, Lexus is catering to the financially secure muscle car fans out there with its  LS 600h, which was the first car to combine a large V-8 with a powerful electric motor for a combined 438 hp at a very respectable 19 to 23 mpg. It's also a real bargain at only $119,910.

Meanwhile, Audi has been painting the map red with the S8. The S8 gets a wider range of mileage at 15 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway and accomplishes this with a somewhat downsized 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 with an amazing 520 hp. It's even a little cheaper than its rival from Lexus at a mere $110,000.

These two brands have been converging for quite some time, and it's interesting to see each independently discover where its customers' priorities lie, whether it's affordability or mileage, power or safety, and in the process blaze a trail of happy buyers a mile wide behind it.

An Audi vs. Lexus contrast is a study in opposites that have found a middle ground, only to start hotly contesting it. The future holds the promise of excitement from both brands.
